GOLF WRIST COCK, HINGE, BREAK OR BEND – CHECK THE WRINKLES

WRIST COCKING: How to properly wrist cock, hinge, break or bend your wrist in golf is a question golfers start to ask as they become more experienced? All these questions mean the same thing. More importantly, the answer to all of them is an important key to producing power and accuracy in your golf swing.

There are two main questions that a person can have on this subject.

When should you start hinging your wrist and what is proper wrist break? This article answers the second question. Nonetheless, let me quickly define what cocking, hinging, breaking, and/or bending your wrist means in the golf swing. It is just the way that your wrists behave on the backswing. Conversely, the unhinging of the wrists on the downswing and follow through is called wrist release. Okay, back to the tip.

Now, I have heard tons of golf tips regarding wrist cocking; some complicated and some simple. Well, say away with the complicated and say hello to the simplest advice you can get on this subject. Are you ready? Check the wrinkles around your wrist.

Speaking in terms of right hand golfers and vice versa for lefties, your left wrist bend should from wrinkles mainly under your thumb. Your right wrist bend should form wrinkles mainly underneath the back side of your hand below your four knuckles. Now, I could belabor the issue, but it is really that simple.

Two other simple ways I have heard this concept explained is that your left hand makes a thumb-up position in the backswing and your right hand looks like it is holding a tray. Well go ahead and do these two things. Now notice where your wrinkles are. Just like I said, right?

Well, maybe. Some people get sloppy with the left hand thumb-up position and make wrinkles underneath their thumb and also in the front of their hand. This is a no-no! You only want the wrinkles under the thumb.

Additionally, some people don’t hold the imaginary tray correctly with their right hand and make wrinkles underneath the thumb and on the back of their right hand. This is another no-no! You only want the wrinkles beneath the back of your hand.

They do make golf wrist hinge training aids. While I can’t begin to name all of them – two popular ones are Power Angle Pro and Swinglyde. Search for these names below to get specs and pricing information.
