Tiger Woods Swing Mechanics

Tiger Woods Swing Mechanics: Just before the Player’s Championship in 2011, Bubba Watson calls out Tiger for focusing too much on has swing mechanics and not enough on just playing golf. Watson’s theory was that if Tiger Woods were just playing by feel he would be much better off for it. Bubba referenced back to Tiger’s 1997 Master’s 12 stroke victory as proof that Tiger was much better off before all the swing changes and swing coaches .

Is there any validity to what Watson was saying or is he just trying to play mental games with Tiger. Kick a wild cat while he is down, if you will. Well, I believe that he was wrong and also was trying to play a head games. Let me explain.

First let’s talk about the changes to Tiger Woods swing mechanics. Tiger has been playing golf from 2 years old to now 36 years old. Naturally, he has grown taller, stronger and heavier throughout his life. Further, Tiger has suffered to his leg, knees and neck throughout his career. You can not keep the same swing is your body is not remaining the same. Ask any great teacher of golf and they will all tell you “different strokes for different folks.” Well the 2 year old Tiger and 20 year old Tiger and 36 year old Tiger are different folks, at least physically. They all require a different swing style.

Bubba Watson, 32 at the time that he made his comments, says he has never had a swing coach. Okay, maybe he would have been better if he did have a swing coach or two or three. He is one of the longest hitters on tour. He is longer than Tiger. Yet, at least as of 2011, he has not a single major. Maybe he has kept the same swing for far too long.

Further, I believe that changing your swing from time to time is good for a golfer’s longevity. Swinging the same way for years while practicing day after day is bound to wear out joints and strain muscles from overuse. Everyone praises Tiger’s fitness and as key to him remaining a great golfer over a long period of time. I believe that slight changes to his mechanics are equally as important.

Even everyday amateur golfers can learn from the lesson that Tiger is teaching. First try to keep your body in top shape to perform the swing you have grown accustom to. Second, recognize when you can no longer perform that swing and make slight changes to make the swing more comfortable and effective for you.
