Tiger Woods Stance: Foot Width and Positions, Weight Distribution, Raised Chin, Alignment, Posture and Ball Position – Copying Tiger Woods’ golf stance can help give you golf swing balance, prevent the most common golf pain and injuries, allow for proper lower and upper body rotation (turn), create backswing power coil and downswing weight transfer in your golf swing as follows:

  1. Setup Foot Width, Position and Weight Distribution – At address, Tiger Woods turns his left and right foot slightly away from his body. His feet are spread greater than a shoulders width apart. His weight is distributed mostly to his right foot.

By rotating your front foot towards the target you will limit your hip turn in the backswing helping to create coil. Too much hip turn in the backswing swing is a power loss (leak). Generally, your hips should not turn more than half the rotation of your shoulder for optimum coil.

This front foot flare also allows him to turn and weight shift on the downswing and finish on the follow through without strain, pain or injury to his upper and lower back and/or legs.

Rotating the back foot away from the target at address allows him to perform his backswing without stress, pain, or injury to your back foot, ankle or knees. This back foot flare also allows him to make a full shoulder turn and finish the backswing with as straight a left arm as possible.

Keeping his foot width greater than shoulder's length gives him stability and balance for his powerful swing speed. He spreads his feet a little further if he is really going for it.

Distributing most of his weight to his right back foot allows him to keep his head and weight behind the ball on his backswing.

  2. Setup with a Raised Chin – Tiger Woods makes sure his chin is raised during his setup. Keeping a high chin to allow him to swing the club to the top of his backswing and make a full shoulder turn. This will also help to avoid strain, pain and injury to his shoulder and neck from trying to turn it under a lowered chin.

  3. Ball Position, Posture and Parallel to Target Alignment – Tiger Woods driver ball position, posture, and alignment follow the swing fundamentals covered in the golf stance basics article. Accordingly, I won’t repeat the same instructions. Just note that his stance is parallel, not open or closed to the target line. This is good if you want to hit the golf ball straight off the tee box.

Tiger Woods Stance Driver Tips Summary: Remember these things:

  1. Experiment with foot flare and foot width to optimize your pain free driver power. Too much foot flare or too wide a foot stance can make it difficult to follow through and can limit your coil. Too little foot flare or too little foot width can cause a loss of balance when trying to make a full swing turn with the driver.

  2. Distribute 60% of your weight to your back right foot during your stance to make shifting your wieght in the backswing easier.

  3. Setup with a raised chin to allow a full pain free shoulder turn.

  4. Learn the golf stance basics for alignment, posture, and ball position to build a powerful foundation for your driver swing.
