Learn how to teach the love of golf to your kids. We golfers love golf. And who among us doesn’t want to dream that one day our kid might be the next Tiger Woods? If not that, then having your child around to play golf with you is not a bonus to sneeze at.

Well, I have discovered some tricks to get youths to participate in the game of golf. Hopefully, they will work for you and you will owe me a debt of gratitude.

Tips 1 - The FFA Child Rule: First, remember that youths like food, fun and attention. So it is important to make junior golfers associate golf with these three things. An ice cream sunday, praise for their good shots and some friendly competition that they can win will go a long ways towards making kids like the game.

Tip 2 – Children Like Money: Hey, I can show you how you can give your kid money without it costing you anything. So calm down. The trick is that you are going to buy your kids certain things anyway (McDonald’s, School Backpacks, ect…) Instead, let them play you in a game of putting, chipping or whatever. Stack the deck in their favor a little bit. Then tell them that they get a certain amount of money they can use for pizza if they win. It works wonders.

Tip 3 – A Little at a Time: Youths have a short attention span for structured lessons. So give them short and quick lessons that they can learn before they get bored. The trick is to give them these quick lessons daily. They may not be able to handle a 1 hour lesson. However, four 15 minute lessons over five days is okay. Plus, they remember a lot more.

Tip 4 – Get Your Kid A Mentor: At some point your child should be exposed to a golfing mentor. They need someone who has excelled in golf to help them along. Kids believe that they can do anything that they have seen someone close to them achieve. The mentor could be you, if you are a great golfer. If not, at some point they will need a mentor (peer or coach) to take their love of golf to the next level.
