10 Steps On How To Regrip Golf Clubs

Removing Old Grip and Grip Tape

1st- Cut through the length of the grip with the hooked blade utility knife, cutting away from your body so that you don't cut yourself. Then peel off the old golf grip.

2nd- Peel and or scrap off the old grip tape from the shaft

3rd- Using a cloth wetted with grip solvent, wipe the tape residue from the shaft and then let the shaft dry completely.

Extra Golf Grip Tip: Steps two and three can be made easier with the use of a heat gun. After applying the heat gun to the old golf grip tape the tape should peel off easily.

Putting on New Grip Tape and Grip

4th- **Optional**: Place the shaft in a bench rubber vice with the clubface perpendicular to the ground and skyward. Do not make it too tight or you will damage the shaft. Be especially careful with graphite shafts. If you don't use a vice you will have to hold the club while you perform some of the steps that follow.

5th- Place doublesided tape about 1/4 inch shorter than the length of the grip around the end of the shaft with 1/4 to 1/2 an inch overhanging the butt end of the shaft. Make sure you do not overlap the tape as you wrap it around the shaft. Then remove the backing from the doublesided tape and push the overhanging tape inside of the shaft.

6th- Put a tee into the vent hole at the butt end of the replacement golf grip and squirt grip solvent into the grip using a squeeze bottle. Place your finger over the open end of the golf grip and shake the solvent around in the grip.

7th- Pour the solvent out of the grip and over the grip tape. A container should be placed beneath the grip tape to catch the solvent that runs off of the tape. Proceed to the next step immediately.

8th- With the alignment decor facing up (most grips have this feature, but not all) push the grip over the tape until the butt of the grip has pushed against the butt of the shaft.

9th- Place the club in your hands and make sure that the grip is aligned properly. If it is not, twist the grip until it is align properly.

  • Key point on how to regrip golf clubs: This alignment feature could appear as a line or wording going down the middle of the grip. The point of the alignment decor is to help golfers grip the club with the confidence of knowing that the clubface is square when their trailing hand thumb is placed down the alignment wording and/or marking.

10th- Let the clubs sit for six hours.

Hopefully the above golf grip tip on how to regrip golf clubs will save you some money regripping your clubs.
