Tiger Woods Tee Shot Tips

You need a proper stance and ball position to learn how to drive a golf ball straight.

According to Tiger Woods, there are two reasons golfers do not know how to drive a golf ball straight. He says golfers either place the ball too far back in their stance and/or too far away from their body.

Additionally, I have seen golfers consistently hit poor drives because the ball is too far forward in their golf stance and/or too close to their body.

Bottom line, you need to have a proper golf stance to learn how to drive a golf ball straight like Tiger.

Tee Shot Tip:
Golf Hand Position at Address

Accordingly, I will quickly discuss the stance for a driver – specifically, how to get the ball the proper distance away from your body. This is essential to learning how to hit a golf ball straight off the tee box.
  • Your grip should hang beneath and slightly forward of your shoulders at address.

  • Any further forward and you are likely to have a pronounced inside to inside swing that will lead to strong draws or hooks.

  • Any closer to your body and you will tend to have a pronounced outside to outside swing that will lead to strong fades or slices.

  • For other tips on the proper stance for driving a golf ball see this article on golf stance basics.

Tee Shot Tip:
Ball Position For Driver

Now let’s quickly address the proper golf ball position at address for drivers, 3-wood, and 5-wood off the tee.
  • Your golf stance ball position should be placed somewhere between your heel and the ball of your front foot.

  • It is important for you to find out exactly what the correct ball position is for you by experimenting.

  • You will find that moving the ball further up in your stance than your ideal spot will produce hooks and/or pulls.

  • You will also find that placing the ball further back in your stance than your ideal spot will cause you to slice and/or push the ball.

Tee Shot Tip:
Trick To Align Golf Club Face Position And Your Body At Address

tee shot ball and club alignment

Now let’s discuss my favorite trick for aligning my shots off of the tee. So many golfers have trouble figuring out how to aim a golf shot. Well, this trick is better than the Jack Nicklaus spot marking trick that you have probably heard so many times before.

I aim a drawn line on my golf ball down the target line. This ball then help your body align from top to bottom starting with your golf foot position on up to your golf shoulder alignment. It also helps you with your golf club head position at address.

Then, during my setup I place my golf club so that the aiming mark on my driver, wood or hybrid lines up with the drawn line on the ball. Then I know that my club is aiming down the target line.

Next, I imagine that a line is extending through the aiming mark on my driver and the line on my ball. I align my feet, knees, hips, shoulders, and eyes with this imaginary line. Now I know that I am aligned perfectly from head to toe.

This trick is essential to learning how to drive a golf ball straight. Really, it is an unfair advantage for any situation where you can place the golf ball before you hit it.

Tee Shot Tip:
Let Your Hands Keep You On Plane
And Square Your Club

Your hand action and position in the golf swing can let you know if you have stayed on plane. After all, no one can actually see themselves swing the club.

So we all need a trick to help us stay oriented during the swing. Well, the hands can tell the story.

SQUARING THE GOLF CLUB

First, the golf club face should be square at the point of contact. The way you accomplish this is by having your hand position square at address and returning naturally back to square at impact.

Tiger accomplishes this by gradually allowing his hand position to go from square at address to parallel to the target line at 9:00 and then to a 45 degree angle at the top of the golf swing.

On the downswing this gradually hand action goes in reverse.

First, your hand position at the top of the golf swing is at 45 degrees. Second, it is parallel to the target line at 9:00. Third, it is back to square at impact.

Finally, your golf hand rotation continues on the follow through mirroring the backswing and downswing action mentioned above.

STAYING ON PLANE

The tee shot tip to staying on plane is remembering your golf grip position at address and maintaining that orientation throughout the golf swing.

First, your grip is extended from your chest properly at address with your left arm straighten. Second, as stated earlier, your grip should be slightly forward of your shoulders at address.

You need to maintain this orientation as you take the club around your body on the backswing and as you bring it back on the downswing and follow through. If you do, you have properly remained on plane. End of story! This is the single plane swing.

There is only one slight caveat I will make to this tip. It is okay to bend your elbow a little on your lead arm if you do not have the flexibility to keep it straight. However, it should return to straight as soon as possible on the downswing.
