How to Break 80
When I began to think about this
How to Break 80
section of this website I had to think about what would be the best way to do it. After all, I had already written section on chipping, putting, pitching, and driving. I did not want to repeat the same information.
So I decided to put a different spin on things. I decided to let you spend a golf season playing with me by looking at the different in text links I will add to this page. You see, at the beginning of the golf season my game is only in the mid 80s and I will even shoot 90 if I am not careful. However, by the middle of the season I learn how to break 80 - my game gets down to low 80s and high 70s. By August, I am shooting low seventies on occasion.
So I thought that I could share my secrets to lower my scores. In the process, I am sure you will be able to figure out how to break 80 for yourself. You should be a 90s golfer already if you are trying to break 80. If you are not, maybe need tips on How to Break 90, instead. In truth, though, this section should be good for everyone to read.
Every year I start off with
golf driver practice
to fix my driver before the golf season over the course of a week or two. It is the part of my game that is normally the easiest to fix. My driver is normally the last thing to go. However, I work on it first because a bad drive can destroy your score on a hole before you even get started. Further, it can put you in tough positions that you are not skilled enough to get out of. Last, it can destroy your golf psyche when you are not getting off the tee.
Next, I will show you
how to practice golf irons
over the course of two or three weeks. With the right practice and focusing on the fundamentals, it is relatively easy to get your iron play to a level where you can learn how to break 80. Your second shot just needs to be on or around the green to setup your short game. Remember, you can get 7 boogies and still shot under 80.
The third part of my training involves working on golf course management from tee to green. I have to build a shot selection routine. I need to build a club selection routine. I need a setup routine. I need one or two swing thoughts that I am going to ride with for the rest of the year. Finally, I begin to work on strategizing around a golf course. These are all critical score card cutters that leave you fast when you have not played golf for an entire winter.
The last thing I work on is fine tuning the short game. I know this is contrary to what you have heard many times from the pros. However, it works for me because it is the hardest thing to get right. Also, I need it to be warm weather to really practice this area of my game. So when the weather breaks I have gotten all the other areas out of the way and I am all about short game practice.
This means I practice sand play, common pitching and chipping situations, putting, lob shots, and short game strategy and short game mental game. I actually work on these areas for the rest of the year. Before working on the short game I am at the low 80’s. The short game sure can cut some strokes.
