Golf Swing Tempo

(Don't Be A Jerk)

This Golf Tips A2Z article provides you with golf swing instruction on proper golf swing tempo to take the jerk out of your takeaway.

The jerk is the sudden yanking of the club at the start or your takeaway. Taking the jerk out of your swing is as important as taking the yips out of your putting.

Yet, everyone knows about the yips and not many golfers know about the jerk. Get a silky smooth swing by reading the golf swing tips below.

(3 Golf Swing Tips For Tempo)

Swing Tip 1: (Hand Press, Leg Press or Both) - For most golfers, I suggest never starting your golf swing from a still position. If you do, you will have a tendency to pull your club away too quickly with your arms or to snatch it up with your hands. Instead, press your hands forward slightly before you begin your takeaway.

  • Alternatively, press your right knee forward a little before beginning your takeaway. Maybe even do both! The point is that it is easier to start the takeaway smoothly if you are already in motion.

Swing Tip 2: (Imagine the Club is Heavy) - When beginning to take the club back, the golf swing tempo you want is slow and low with your arms, hips, and shoulders beginning to turn at the same time. Of course, if you had a heavy golf club in your hand you would take it back slow and low and would use your arms hips and shoulders all at once to move it.

  • So use this swing thought to improve your takeaway golf swing tempo. Actually, that is why there are heavy training aid swing sticks. They help incorporate this habit into your swing.

Swing Tip 3: (Easy as 1,2,3) - As a beginning rule of thumb, start the takeaway counting 1. Reach the tops of the backswing at the count of 2. Complete your downswing (from the top of the backswing to impact) at 3. If your backswing is smooth and timed correctly, your takeaway tempo should be fine.

  • This timing tip is not meant to be an exact rule, but it does give you an idea of how fast the takeaway should be so that you don't have a jerk.
