Golf Swing Speed and Distance

In golf there is a great emphasis on golf swing speed because of its relationship to distance. But, with that said, the relationship of swing speed vs. distance is not as straight forward as you may think.

In other words, Golfer A and Golfer B could go to a demo club day and both get measured by a pro with a speed radar and find out that their swing characteristics and club head speeds are the same. Nonetheless, when they go out to play a round of golf together, Golfer A may not drive the ball as far as Golfer B. Why is that?

Well, there could be a number of equipment related reasons for above scenario. The golfer(s) using a properly fitted golf shaft flex, shaft length, club head loft and lie, and/or ball compression will have an advantage. The golfer with the properly fitted golf shaft will get the right snap at impact for increased swing speed. The golfer using the club with the correct loft will have the most advantageous ball spin for distance. The golfer with the correct shaft length and lie will be more likely to make solid contact with the center of the clubface for increased distance. Finally, the golfer with the right ball compression will get the optimum mash factor for top distance.

These differences would not have been noticed at the golf shop if they were both using the same demo clubs to measure their club head speed.

So, yes swing speed does relate to distance. However, golf swing speed is increased or enhanced by properly fitted golf clubs and fitted golf balls. When all of these things come together you can maximize the distance you achieve with your current golf swing and setup. This is what golf swing speed and distance charts will show you – your maximized distance with your current swing speed. So, if your distances with your good “hitting the sweet spot” shots do not match up with what you notice on such a chart, it is probably your golf equipment.

With that said, many golfers don’t want to stop at just improving their swing equipment. Instead, they want the swing speed of Tiger Woods, Dustin Johnson, Ernie Els, John Daly, or, if you are female, Michelle Wie. These men and women possess such tremendous swing speed by optimized and maximized shoulder turn and hip turn movements on the backswing known as the x-factor and y-factor positions. They maintain their wrist hinge on the downswing until just before impact. They have strong legs and core muscles to maintain their balance at high swing speeds. Finally, they have the flexibility needed to making achieving all the necessary golf swing position possible and effortless.

Well, to increase your swing speed to this level it takes learning a proper golf swing doing golf swing exercises and using golf swing speed training aids to increase your flexibility and strength. There are really no short cuts.
