Golf Swing Mechanics

(It Takes Two Legs to Pivot)

This Golf Tips A2Z article focuses on a particular area of proper golf swing mechanics -- the pivot. If you are using or being taught the two leg pivot, reverse pivoting and/or an incomplete follow-through should not be a problem for you.

Are you pivoting correctly? This golf swing instruction is just what you need to improve your golf swing.

(3 Must Knows About Pivoting)

Proper Golf Swing Pivot Tip: The proper golf swing mechanics for the pivot are simple. You want to begin your backswing by turning your hips and shoulders using your back leg as the pivot. Then on the downswing and follow through you want to turn your hips and shoulders using your front leg as the pivot. A common mistake of golfers, however, is to ignore one of these steps in the swing leading to the reverse pivot. Below is an explanation of what it means to use your legs as pivot points and golf swing tips to help you determine if you have a problem pivoting properly.

Proper Golf Swing Pivot Explanation: The sport motion most similar to the golf swing pivot is the motion of a baseball pitcher. Imagine you are watching the baseball picture go through his wind up. First the pitcher takes the ball back lifting his front leg off the ground and turning his back to hitter. Only his back leg is left on the ground, so he is obviously pivoting his turn on his back leg when he takes is arm back to throw. Then on the follow through to throw the ball he plants his front leg and turn through to throw the ball at the plate. The swing mechanics for the golf pivot works the same way as the pivoting for pitching a baseball.

Golf Swing Tip for Detecting Improper Leg Pivot: There are two signs that will help you detect an improper pivot. First, if you have an improper pivot on your backswing you will not be able to lift the heel of your front foot off the ground during your backswing (a habit of many good golfers during the backswing). If you can't lift the back heel off the ground it means your weight is on the front foot, thus meaning you are pivoting on the front foot. Similarly, if on the follow through you are unable to turn fully with your body facing the target and your back leg finishing on the toes, you are improperly pivoting on your back leg during the downswing and follow through.
