Below, learn the golf swing basics to begin attacking the greens with confidence.

6 Basics to the Golf Swing

1st Basic - Backswing (Upper Body)

  • Keeping your hands extended from your chest, use your arms, shoulders, hip, and hands to swing the club around your spine.

  • Once you have finished swinging the club
    • the club is above your back shoulder;
    • the club is pointing down the target line;
    • your back is facing the target; and
    • your front shoulder is beneath your chin.

  • Your hands, arms, shoulders, and hip should stop at the same time.

2nd Basic - Backswing (Lower Body)

  • (Back Leg) - During the backswing, your back leg stays in its setup stance position.

    • Use your back leg to support your weight and to turn your hips around on the backswing.

  • (Front Leg) - Obviously, your front leg should support none of your weight on the backswing, since your back leg is supporting you.

    • The front knee moves towards the ball and your heel may come off of the ground (this is okay if it does).
    • Now, if you setup with your front knee already pointed towards the ball, the knee may not move much.

3rd Basic - Downswing (Upper Body)

  • Use your upper arms, shoulders, and hips to bring the club from above your shoulder back to strike the ball in a tighter circular motion than you used to take the club back over your shoulders.

  • Keep your hands completely out of the action on the downswing, other than to obviously hold onto the club. In other words, do not flip the hands.

  • Try to make contact with the ball first and then the ground in front of the ball after impact.

4th Basic - Downswing (Legs) - On the downswing you want to be gradually transferring your weight from your back leg to the front foot so that the hip can turn around the front leg on the downswing.

5th Basic - (Head During Backswing and Downswing) - From the beginning of the swing to the moment of impact fix your eye on the exact spot in back of the ball the you want to strike.

  • If you cant keep your eye on the spot you pick on the back of the ball, you are moving your head improperly.

6th Basic - (Follow Through) - After striking the ball, continue your arms, shoulder, and hips turning around the front leg to first have your hands shake hand with an imaginary person in front of you and then finishes over your front shoulder.

  • Your chest finishes facing the target.

  • You front leg finish fairly straight.

  • Your back leg finishes on the toe with the knee and leg somewhat pointed down the target line.

  • After impact, your head turns to look up for the ball and finishes looking down the target line.

So there you have the proper golf swing basics. See the Golf Tips A2Z articles below for more instruction on golf basics.
