(Stance and Setup)

This Golf Tips A2Z article provides golf putting tips and lessons on the effects that your stance and setup have on your putting stroke.

By understanding these differences you should be able to pick a stance and setup that fits your path line and vantage point you need to consistently stroke accurate putts.

Further, your should understand the importance of being consistent with your putting stance and setup.

By using a stance and setup suited for your putting style and remaining consistent, you will sink your putts more consistently.

Stance Width Putting Lesson

A narrow stance (less than a shoulders' width) will more naturally lead to your shoulders turning around your body during the putting stroke. This is great for those who have an inside to inside putting stroke.

A wider stance (shoulders width or slightly wider) will more naturally lead to your shoulders rocking in a pendulum fashion. This is great for those who prefer a straight back and straight through putting stroke.

Stance Height Putting Lessons

Slumped stances are mostly preferred by golfers with handsy putting styles.

Regular full swing stances (where you tilt from the hips) are preferred by golfers with inside to inside putting strokes. This makes since given that the full swing is an inside to inside swing.

Upright stances are more suited for those with a straight back to straight back putting style. This is because an upright stance more naturally promotes the pendulum rocking of the shoulders.

Vantage Point Golf Putting Tips

Vantage Point Law: Your eyes are the tool you use to lock onto the target line when setting up behind your putt. Accordingly, you need to maintain a consistent vantage point from putt to putt to be consistent at lining up your putter.

Be careful! You can change your vantage point by changing your vertical height and/or your horizontal distance from the ball.

Even the slightest changes in vantage point can have you guessing on the greens all day.

Hand Position Golf Putting Tips

Hand Position Compared to Shoulder: Your hand position compared to the shoulders affects your natural putting path line.
  • If your hand are inside your shoulders coming in towards your waist, your natural path line is outside to outside.

  • If your hands are directly beneath your body, your putter will naturally go straight back and straight through.

  • If your hands are outside of your shoulders, your natural path line will be inside to inside.

Hand Position Compared to Ball: Your hand position in relation to the golf ball will affect the loft of your putter.

  • If your hands are in front of the golf ball at address, it will deloft your putter.

  • If your hands are behind the golf ball at address, it will increase the loft on your putter.

  • If your hands are even with the ball you will maintain the natural loft of your putter.

Accordingly, the effective loft of your putter is a function of your putters natural loft and your hand position. This is important because your putter loft has to be just right to start the ball rolling correctly.
