Golf Grip Tips | Your Natural Grip | How to Grip A Golf Club
Below are golf grip tips for how to hold a golf club to form your natural strong, weak, neutral, interlocking, overlapping, ten finger, distance, &/or control style.
This golf grip article tells you how to grip a golf club for full swing shots to form a sound comfortable natural grip.
Try it out and see how it performs for you. There are many grips that are used by the pro's. After years of play, they form their games around their own personal grip styles.
Why not start off that way? I will walk you through the process below.
Golf Grip Tip 1 - (Establish Clubface Position First): Align the clubface (open, square, or closed) the way you want it at address, before gripping the club. Simply stretch the club out in front of your chest and turn the clubface angle. This minimizes the need to manipulate the club after establishing your grip.
Golf Grip Tip 2 - (Lead Hand Grips First): Shake hands with the golf club to form a natural (strong, weak, or neutral) grip. Grip down on the club 1/4 an inch from the end of the grip.
- Look straight down at your lead hand grip. If you see 2 or fewer knuckles you have a weak grip. If you have 3 & 1/2 or more knuckles you have a strong grip. Anything in between is a neutral grip.
- Adjustment - Adjust your grip to 2 knuckles if fewer show and adjust them to 3 1/2 knuckles if more than that show. You don't want your grip to be too strong or too weak.
Golf Grip Tip 3 - (Form Lead Hand Distance or Control Grip): Actually, you have already formed a distance or control lead hand grip. If you gripped the club mostly in you fingers you formed a natural distance grip. If you gripped the club towards the middle of your hand, you formed a control grip.
- Lead Hand Thumb - Place the thumb of your lead hand to the side of the grip.
- Adjustment - Do not grip the club across the middle of your palm. If you did, change the grip so that it goes across your hand from your index finger to the heel pad of your lead hand.
Golf Grip Tip 4 - (Back Hand Grips Second) - Now have your back hand shake with the grip beneath your lead hand. The palm of your back hand should directly face the palm of your front hand. Your hand crease beneath your back hand's thumb goes over your lead hand's thumb.
- Your Back Hand Thumb - If you have placed this thumb extended down the shaft, you have formed a control back hand grip. If it is short you have a distance back hand grip.
Golf Grip Tip 5 - Connect Hands - Now it is time to connect your hands. The three most common options are below. Use the one most comfortable for you.
- Ten Finger Grip: Make sure that the pinky of the back hand is pressed firmly against the index finger of your lead hand.
- Interlocking Grip: Interlock your pinky finger of your back hand with the index finger of your front hand.
- Overlapping Grip: Place the pinky finger of your back hand over the index finger of your front hand.
Golf Grip Tip 6 - (Re-check Club Face Position) - Make sure the clubface has not moved from the setup address position you desire. If it has, it is very simple to rotate the club a little while maintaining your grip.
So What Grip Have You Formed?
You naturally picked between a weak, strong, or neutral grip. You naturally choose between a control, distance and control/distance grip. Finally, you naturally choose between the ten finger, interlocking, and overlapping grip.
Well, now you play with your natural golf grip. Note the good and bad of your swing while using this grip. Most importantly note your distance, ball flight (left, right, high, low), and accuracy.
Hopefully, your naturally selected grip is the right grip for you. If it is not, I can show you how to grip the golf club making small changes to improve common faults you notice in your swing. See
