Golf Grip Tips On Golf Grip Pressure

It is very important to learn how to establish and maintain proper golf grip pressure throughout the swing. Every golf instruction book I have ever read (too many) will tell you as much.

With too little grip pressure you will lose control of the swing due to the club slipping. With too much pressure, you will tighten up your forearm muscles destroying a fluid swing.

Below are some golf grip tips on how to establish and maintain proper grip pressure throughout your golf swing. I learned these the hard way.

You can learn these golf grip pressure secrets quick and forever benefit from them.

11 Golf Grip Pressure Tips

Tip 1: Setup With Proper Golf Grip Pressure - I have heard many explanations for proper grip pressure. Bottomline, you should hold the club as firmly as you can without making your forarm muscles rock tight. These muscles should stay fairly soft. Too tight and you destroy your wrist action in the swing and lose distance and accuracy.

Tip 2: Establish Golf Grip Pressure with the Proper Fingers - The pinky, second, and middle finger of your lead grip hand and the second and middle finger of your back hand are the main fingers that provide grip pressure. The exception is the ten finger grip (baseball grip), with which the back hand pinky finger would help to support grip pressure.

Tip 3: Don't Use the Wrong Fingers The thumb and the pointer finger of both hands play only a very minor role in grip pressure. They are mainly used for feel. Don't be tempted to use these fingers too strongly to support your golf grip pressure. Your swing will suffer.

Tip 4: Baseball Grip - As hinted to in the 2nd tip above, the ten finger or golf baseball grip can help those with weak finger establish more grip pressure without over tightening their forearm muscles. For more on the golf baseball grip see this golf baseball grip article.

Tip 5: Grip Like Ben Hogan - For the lead hand, Ben Hogan would run the grip of the club from the base of the index finger to under the heel pad of the lead hand. If done properly, you should be able to hold the club with just the middle finger and heel pad. Not all pro's use this style grip, but if your hands are too weak to form enough grip pressure, Hogan's grip could help you.

Tip 6: Strengthen Your Fingers Like Arnold - Use tennis balls, gripping balls, or other devices to strengthen your fingers. Arnold Palmer would say to grip your steering wheel with your fingers. By increasing your grip strength you will decrease the amount of tension needed to form and maintain proper grip pressure throughout the swing.

Tip 7: Swing with Your Hips and Shoulders - This is good advise in general. Specific to this article though, if you do not turn your hips and shoulders to take the club back, you will have to force the club back with your hands and arms causing added tension in your grip, grip slippage, and a separation of your hands from one another and from the grip. Needless to say, all of these things are bad for generating a good swing.

Tip 8: Use Clean Fitted Unworn Grips - A proper grip is one that is clean, in good shape, and that is fitted for your hand. I used to play with unclean and worn grips until I realized the importance of proper grips. So, if you have as well, you are not alone.

Tip 9: Use Lighter Clubs - Lighter clubs do not takes as much effort to support during the swing. You may be surprised how much control you gain from using lighter clubs if you have problems with grip pressure.

Tip 10: Wear a Clean Unworn Fitted Lead Hand Glove - Wearing a clean unworn fitted lead hand glove will reduce the amount of pressure you need to maintain control of the club throughout the swing. This means less grip tension, less grip slippage, and more consistent shots.

Tip 11: Keep Your Grip Dry - Carry a dry towel with you on rainy or misty days. Playing in the rain is bad enough without having to worry about a wet slippery grip. Can you tell I don't like playing golf in the rain?

The above golf grip tips on golf grip pressure will improve your golf scores in astounding ways if you incorporate the advice into your golf game.
