(Golf Swing Mechanics & Sequence for Legs)

This Golf Tips A2Z article provides free golf swing tips on the proper golf swing mechanics and proper golf swing sequence for the legs during the backswing and downswing.

Use the golf swing instruction below to gain stability, coil and weight transfer to improve your golf swing.

Golf Swing Tips for Backswing

Golf Tip 1 - (Keep Back Leg Still During Backswing): Your back legs must stay still during the backswing for proper golf swing coil and stability by starting off flexed at address and remaining that way throughout the backswing. The back leg resists the turn of the hips and shoulders causing coil to build up in the legs and your core. At the same time, it supports and stabilizes your body weight during the backswing.

Golf Tip 2 - (Weight Moves From Front Leg to Back Leg): Your front leg begins flexed at addressed like your back leg does. However, unlike the back leg, the knee of the back leg moves towards the ball during the backswing. Also, for many good golfers, the front foot rolls towards the ball with the back heel of the front foot coming slightly off the ground. Some good golfers, however, may choose to leave the front foot flat.

Golf Swing Tips for Downswing

Golf Tip 3 - (Thrust Back Leg on Downswing): Your back leg is meant to thrust your weight through the ball during impact. Once your hands begin to approach the golf ball in the downswing your back legs are use to thrust any weight that remains on the back leg forward during impact.

Golf Tip 4 - (Front Leg Moves Away From Ball in Downswing):

Your front leg should move away from the ball in the downswing to clear room for your hips to turn and to transfer your weight forward. As your front knee moves down the target line away from the ball, your front foot rolls slightly toward the target. Your front knee remains bent during the downswing, but it becomes less bent as you approach impact. During the follow through the front leg completely straightens.
