Downswing Quick Hips
On the downswing, getting your hips to turn enough is the usual problem for most golfers. However, there are always the exceptions to the rule. And when it comes to over rotation of the hips, the exceptions are normally slender flexible women.
But rather you are a women or a man, hips that turn too fast for you upper body to catch up with by impact can be as much a problem as hips that don’t rotate. For golfer with this problem, holding back the acceleration of the hips can be a key swing thought and drill.
One way you may be able to tell if your hips over rotate is by looking at your finishing position on the follow through. If they have rotated passed facing the target, you hips may have a tendency to over-rotate on the down swing.
Another way to tell is if you find that your club tends to get trapped behind your body. Of course, getting trapped can also be caused by swinging your club too far under your plane. But, you should be able to figure out which is the cause and fix the problem.
In the long run, the best solution for matching up your hip speed with your upper body speed is to get in the workout room. A stronger core and upper body will synchronize your upper and lower body motion. Until then, golfers with hips too quick for their upper bodies have to make a conscious effort to slow down their hip acceleration.
