Golf Downswing Hip Turn

It would be wrong to say that you start your downswing with your hip turn. In actuality, you start your downswing from the ground up.

The proper initial foot action then causes the hips to move laterally towards the target (called the hip bump). This foot action also makes your front shoulder rock up building lag in the shoulders and back muscles. So it is the feet that start the downward swing building lag power and clearing the hips.

So before you ever get the hip turn to work for you, you must build the proper foot action into your muscle memory to start the hips and shoulders off correctly. Oh, but after the initial foot action it is go time and go time is hip turn time. It is a great swing thought for swinging your body’s momentum into the ball and down the target line.

In fact, you will know when you are beginning to master the golf down swing when you are able to feel the two phases. You will take your backswing (1) and then feel the weight shift, hip shift and shoulder lag (2) and then its go time for swinging into the ball. Yes, from the backswing to impact is 1, 2, 3 and three is go time with your hip rotation.

Now if you skip step two, your hip rotation will only produce an over the top swing or cause your arms to get trapped behind your body. If you skip the hip turn in step 3 you will slap at the ball with your arms. So the secret is not just hip turn, but hip turn at go time.

Easy as 1, 2, 3. Get her done! Get your swing together. Then take your buddies money.
