Downswing: Thrust Forward with Inside of Back Foot
On the downswing, I believe that every golfer knows instinctively that they must get their weight transferred. By this I mean get the weight placed on their back foot during the
backswing
moved to their front foot. The real issue is that they just don’t know how to do so correctly.
Of course, failure to thrust forward properly leads to the reverse pivot. You know you have this problem because your friends are probably constantly telling you so. Or maybe they don’t use those terms. It could just be that they keep telling you that you are lifting your front foot on the down swing. But, these are but two ways of saying the same thing.
Well, I believe that no one does this on purpose. This issue is their lack of understanding the biomechanics of the back foot thrust. Luckily, the secret is easy to explain. And with practice, your occasional or persistent reverse pivot blues should be gone forever.
The Secret: Thrust forward on the inside of the back foot. This is done by rolling the foot and ankle toward the target and then applying downward pressure on the rolled foot. Because the foot is rolled forward, the downward pressure will move your weight forward.
The problem, however, is that many golfers try to thrust by pressing with their toes. But, this toe press is biomechanically designed to press the back leg up into the air (like it would in a jumping action). It is not designed to move your weight laterally toward your front foot. The result is that your weight stays on your back foot causing the reverse pivot.
So, incorporate proper back foot trust technique to improve your game.
